A woman died and six others were injured in an accident that occurred yesterday (10) morning between Athurugiriya and Kadawatha on the Southern Expressway.
The accident took place when a van that was plying from Galle collided with a jeep travelling from the Kahathuduwa area towards Katunayake. The deceased was identified as Sunethra Wijesekera Pathirana (56), a resident of Talahena in the Malabe area.
The victim was among a group of people travelling in the van that was returning from a funeral in Galle. Police said that she had been thrown out of the vehicle following the accident.
“Four other women in the van and two persons travelling in the jeep were admitted to the Homagama Base Hospital,” Highway Tourism Police Division sources said.
