SC to notify ruling on VAT Amendment Bill

The Supreme Court yesterday stated that it will inform the Speaker of its ruling on the constitutionality of the “Value Added Tax (Amendment) Bill” submitted for Parliamentary approval.

 The Supreme Court made this announcement after considering two petitions filed, requesting that the Clauses in the Bill be ruled against the Constitution.

These petition were called before a bench of Supreme Court judges comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justice S.Thurairaja and Justice Arjuna Obeyesekere.

The attorney General has been cited as the respondent in these petitions

It was stated in these petitions that this Bill was published in the gazette on September 27 and was included in the Parliamentary Order paper on October 18 .

When the petition was called, President’s Counsel K. Kanageeswaran and attorney Darshana Weraduvage, who appeared for the petitioners, presented the facts at length.

State Counsel Nirmalan Wigneswaran, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General, said that this Bill was submitted according to the government’s decision.
