Officials working hard on debt restructuring - Minister

Cabinet Spokesperson and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane yesterday said that the main problem facing the country is the debt

restructuring process and the government is making all possible efforts and giving priority to that process.

The minister said this while attending the press conference to announce the Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department yesterday (26).

Responding to a question by a journalist regarding reports published in the media regarding the debt restructuring process, the Minister said that he cannot give a specific answer to certain reports published in the media regarding the debt restructuring process.

The main problem that the country is facing today is the payment of debt taken from foreign countries. After Independence, every government has taken foreign loans. It is difficult for any government to function without obtaining foreign loans. If the country is branded as a bankrupt country, we will not be able to buy anything like gas, fuel and machinery. Some foreign loans have been temporarily suspended.

Commenting further, the minister pointed out that the restructuring of this debt is constantly going on and that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Finance Ministry and other officials are working hard for it.
