Peradeniya Police arrested a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of a woman at Yahalathenna in Kandy on October 15. “The suspect is a resident of Muruthalawa, Kandy,” Police said. The residents of Yahalathenna found the 65-year-old woman, who lived alone dead inside her house on October 15.The suspect, who is a labourer, had stolen the gold jewellery owned by the victim after killing her. However, the Police have been able to recover some of the stolen jewellery. Peradeniya Police are conducting further investigations.
This is the sixth murder reported from the Kandy Police Division within the past four months. The previous cases were reported from Kadugannawa, Welambada, Kandy, Uguressa Pitiya and Elugoda areas where four women and a youth were murdered. Three of them had been committed by the criminals for money and gold jewellery.
Police have been able to arrest the suspects in connection with these six murders within two weeks of the crimes takeing place.
