The National Netball players turned to Basketball players when they were involved in the Mercantile Basketball tournament which ended at the Royal College Sports Complex last Wednesday. The Mercantile Basketball Women’s final between HNB and Commercial Credit dished out a good battle while HNB came back strongly after the tough game to clinch the title. HNB won the final with a four points margin (50-46).
The highlight of this final National Netball Captain Gayanjali Amarawansa and members of the Asia Cup Netball champions team Gayani Dissanayake and Malmi Hettiarachi played in this final as HNB members. Young Malmi Hettiarachchi was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. In the first quarter Commercial Credit led the game 7-5. Coming into the second quarter, rebounds were dominated by HNB. By the end of the second quarter HNB led the game by three points.
Two HNB players Anjalee Ekanayake and Malmi Hettiarachchi led the battle. The third quarter ended with a score line of 41-28 in favour of HNB ladies. However the deciding fourth quarter both sides battled it hard but finally HNB won the game in a thrilling finish.
