Hate speeches shocking for religion-neutral country like India, says Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Friday said “this is the 21st century, where have we reached in name of religion”?

The court, hearing a petition on hate speeches, said the state of affairs was “shocking for a country that is supposed to be religion-neutral”.

The apex court had earlier raised questions of the TV shows conducted by major electronic media outlets majority of which are focused on religious issues. However, the court did not specifically name any media house or any show.

Earlier this month responding to a petition on hate speech, the court also noted that while it might concur with a petitioner’s assertion that hate speech pollutes public discourse and must be stopped, the court needs particular examples of hate speech in order to take action and cannot do so based solely on abstract arguments.

Harpreet Mansukhani, the petitioner in person, was urged by a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit to concentrate on specific instances of hate speech.
