The Navy apprehended five persons who were engaged in night diving for sea cucumber, during a special operation conducted off Kudairippu, Vettalakeni in Jaffna on Thursday.
Along with the suspects, two dinghies and about 10,000 illegally harvested sea cucumbers were also taken into naval custody.The Sri Lanka Navy conducts constant operations in the coastal areas around the island to prevent various forms of illegal fishing activities. The apprehension was made by a team of Marine personnel of the Naval Deployment Vettilaikeni in the Northern Naval Command. The apprehended persons who are residents of Kuchchaweli, aged between 22 and 35 years were handed over to the Thalayadi Fisheries Inspector in Jaffna for further investigations.
