Child thief committed 29 other thefts

A 10-year-old child from Ja-Ela who was arrested with regards to theft of money from a fish vendor has committed 29 other thefts, Police said.  

Inspector Ranjith Premasiri, Police Officer in Charge of Judicial Duties at Ja-Ela Police station, said the child thief was arrested during the police investigation into a complaint by a fish vendor regarding a theft of Rs.9,700.

Police have after arresting the child uncovered that he has committed at least 29 other thefts. Among those thefts are stealing mobile phones, three-wheeler spare parts, motorcycle spare parts.

The child who had only gone to school until the 04th grade has to stop schooling due to the separation of his mother and father. This child had used the money which he got from thefts to eat with his friends in hotels. An elderly woman of the area also borrowed money from this child, it has been revealed. During interrogation the child had requested the police to send him to School again, even from a place of custody. Police said that they will take further action after obtaining a probation report regarding the child and presenting him to the Court.
