CA acquits former PS Chairman of child molest charges

Former Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Saruwa Liyanage Sunil who was convicted of molesting an underaged girl and sentenced to 15 years’ Rigorous Imprisonment by the Colombo High Court was yesterday acquitted and discharged by the Court of Appeal.

This was announced while giving the verdict on an appeal petition filed by the accused Saruwa Liyanage Sunil seeking an order quashing the Colombo High Court verdict that sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment and he be acquitted discharged.

The judgment was delivered by the Court of Appeal Bench comprising Justices Sampath Abeykoon and P.Kumararatnam. On January 17, 2020, the Colombo High Court found the accused guilty for molesting an underaged girl and sentenced him to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment. In addition, the accused was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000 and a compensation of Rs. 250,000 to the victim. Following the verdict, he filed an appeal in the Court of Appeal challenging his sentence.

He had complained that the High Court had convicted him only on the basis of video evidence given to the Child Protection Authority by the alleged molested girl.

After considering the all facts, accused Sunil was acquitted and discharged from all alleged charges by the Court of Appeal.
