Welikada inmate still missing for six days

Prison officers were yet to find the whereabouts of the inmate of Welikada Prison who had gone missing for six days by yesterday.

The inmate who was imprisoned for one month for his failure to pay a fine of Rs.2,000 for possessing cannabis on September 16, was reported missing the same day evening.

 

Welikada Prison Superintendent on the order of Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya has launched an investigation into this incident. Officers have no clue so far of the way the inmate had used to escape from their custody.

The suspect, 36-year-old Meepage Sankha has been identified as a person who lived in Maligawatta and Nattandiya. Welikada Prison has also informed the details of this inmate to several police stations including Borella, Malambe and Marawila and the Criminal Investigation Department. According to the Prison Department sources, the department would take disciplinary action against the officers who were on duty that day if this inmate had escaped the prison as a result of the negligence of duty by them.
