Press printing fake GSMB licences raided

The Panadura Walana Anti-corruption Unit said that they raided a printing press on Dambulla road  in Kurunegala, where licences issued by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) were being printed and sold.

During the raid, the police took into their custody, the owner of the printing press, 102 counterfeit licenses, printing machinery, two tipper trucks which had transported sand using forged licenses and their drivers, as well as a large quantity of raw material used for printing including papers.

The raid was carried out on a tip off received by the Panadura Walana anti- corruption unit about a printing press selling fake mineral and sand licenses for money.

During questioning of the press owner who was arrested, it had been stated that a book containing 50 fake licences was sold for Rs.5000 rupees and this racket had been going on for about a year.

A police officer who carried out the raid, said that subsequently, two tippers which had transported sand using forged licences were taken into custody opposite a well-known school in the North Western province.

Police also said forged licences in the possession of the suspects had fake signatures of officials of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and had been stamped using a rubber seal as well.

According to the police, printing fake licenses and selling them would have resulted in a loss ofmillions of rupees to the government.The suspects and property that were taken into custody have been handed over to the Kurunegala Police for further investigation.
