OMP receives 14,988 complaints of missing persons

The Office of the Missing Persons (OMP) has received 14,988 complaints  related to persons who have disappeared due to conflicts, Judicial Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister President’s Counsel Dr.Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe said.

The minister made this remark while attending a press conference held at the Ministry Auditorium on the occasion of the International Day of Commemoration of Missing Persons last Wednesday.

This office has been established for the rights of the missing persons as well as to do justice for them, to do justice for the relatives of the missing persons and to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Although four years have passed since this office was established by the Office of Missing Persons Act No. 16 of 2016, investigations have been slow.

The Minister also said that the investigation has been completed in four months after the new officers were appointed to the office. The Minister also stated that it is his aim to complete investigations into all the complaints related to missing persons in the next two years.

The Minister also said that a constitutional legal framework will be prepared to protect rural peace by preventing conflicts in terms of race, religion and language by making the sincere efforts to create national unity successful.

The certificate provided by the Office of Missing Persons is essential for obtaining compensation, he added. The Minister said that during the war, personal revenges were taken under the guise of conflicts, some people went abroad claiming to be missing, and as a solution to all these, the Office of Missing Persons has been established to carry out constitutional investigations.
