IGP transfers 34 OICs over May 9 mayhem

Inspector General C. D. Wickramaratne has ordered the removal of 34 Officers in Charge (OICs) of police stations who did not take proper measures to prevent damage to property and lives during the May 9 mayhem.

They have been transferred to other stations and deployed in general duties. On Wednesday itself 23 officers have been transferred. Although these officers have been transferred, permanent OICs have not been appointed to those police stations to replace them. A senior officer of the police headquarters said applications have been called from the officers who wish to become OICs and those having relevant qualifications have been interviewed and a group of eligible officers have been selected. The official said that the vacancies will be filled from them.
