Hit-and-run doctor arrested

Welikanda Police say that a medical doctor attached to the Batticaloa General Hospital, who fled the scene after causing serious injuries to a motorcyclist in a vehicle accident on the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa main road in the Welikanda-Pulliaraadi area on September 2, has been arrested along with the car he was driving yesterday.

Welikanda Police Officer in Charge, Inspector Samantha Ratnayake said that the preliminary investigations have revealed that the doctor in question who was travelling in the car from Batticaloa to Polonnaruwa had fled after colliding with a motorbike.

Welikanda Police conducting investigations say that 26-year-old Nuvan Shantha, who resides at Aselapura, Welikanda was seriously injured in the accident.

A lorry driver who was passing by the scene of the accident had given the number plate of the car to the Welikanda Police.

Accordingly, from information obtained from the Motor Vehicle Commissioners Department, the Welikanda Police has confirmed that the car in question belongs to the doctor.
