ENDW vs INDW: Smriti Mandhana’s heroic performance levels series at 1-1

Derby: Indian women have won the 2nd T20I against England after the heroic performance of Smriti Mandhana at County Ground. Opting to bat first, England had put 142 runs on board but failed to defend it and lost the game by 8 wickets.

The top order for England was dismissed so cheaply that they couldn’t even get score in double digits. The English women lost their first wickets within first three overs. The middle order, Bryony Smith and Amy Jones, then brought steadiness in the scoreline and garnered 32 runs for the fourth wicket.

The surprising factor in the English squad was the performance of Freya Kemp who was playing as part of lower order and hit a half-century. It was for her that England could reach a decent total of 142 runs.

M Bouchier (34) and Kemp (51) were the highest scorers of the side and they, then, put the onus on the bowlers who tried their best but couldn’t grab a victory.

While in the Indian camp, Shafali Verma and Smirti Mandhana opened and garnered 55 runs for the first wicket itself. Verma’s departure gave place to Dayalan Hemalatha but she couldn’t stay on crease for long. Smriti Mandhana was enough to win the game single handedly.

After becoming the Player of the Match, Mandhana said, “We were keen to come back stronger and level the series. I was pushing myself and happy that I could contribute to the victory. Good weather to bat (in England), before the CWG games, I think I found the touch back. In T20 cricket, you’d look to try and get a good start to the team. Happy to contribute to the team.”

Both the sides will now be playing the decider game tomorrow to win series trophy.
