New Delhi: Twitter seems to be obsessed with the never-ending trend- Boycott Bollywood. Whenever a big budget film is about to make its release, a section of Twitter users come to the front with the hashtag #BoycottBollywood. The reasons are often religious, political, moral or flimsy at best.
Having said that, let us look at the pictures which have faced the boycott trend but managed to come up with a thumbs up.
The Dirty Picture (2011)
One of the film’s first posters showed Vidya Balan posing sultrily with the three male leads of the film (Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor), causing the criminal court of Nampally (Telangana) to book the actress for indecent photographs. The petition against the actress also mentioned that the hoarding and posters of The Dirty Picture were corrupting the minds of people and causing harm to society.
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013)
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone starrer love saga garnered boycott calls due to its title which was earlier ‘RamLeela’. The film faced backlashes for hurting religious sentiments. The movie’s title finally changed to Ram-Leela before its release.
PK (2014)
Aamir Khan’s PK faced a major boycott trend for allegedly hurting Hindu religious practices and sentiments. Also his naked poster triggued massive storm over the internet as morally harmful.
Haider (2014)
Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider witnessed extremely polarising opinions for its representation of the Indian Army and the separatist movement.
Dangal (2016)
The film received major backlash due to Aamir Khan’s ‘intolerant india’ remark.
Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017)
Lipstick Under My Burkha was publicly boycotted by a group of Muslim leaders in Bhopal for allegedly mocking the Islamic culture and hurting their religious sentiments. It also faced a stay order on its release by the Central Board for Film Certification claiming that the film was too “lady-oriented”.
Padmawat (2018)
Deepika Padukone’s Padmavat is one of the biggest controversies of the last decade. The film was embroiled in controversy since it began shooting. From vandalising the sets to verbal assaults to the cast and director-Padmavat saw everything. Calls for a nationwide ban was also face by the film.
Veere Di Wedding (2018)
Swara Bhaskar, Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Sikha Talsania starrer received boycott calls for showing utter boldness, which said to be morally incorrect according to a section of people.
Sadak 2 (2020)
The film received much hate as many called it a ‘product of nepotism’.
Darlings (2022)
Netizens made #BoycottAliaBhatt trend accusing her of promoting male domestic violence.
11. Laal Singh Chaddha (2022)
Aamir’s film again faced the boycott trend due to the same old remark he made years back.
12. Raksha Bandhan (2022)
Akshay Kumar’s last movie Raksha Bandhan faced backlah after its writter Kanika Dhillon was slammed after her old Tweets surfaced online.
