Tharushi Karunaratne enters 400m semis

The promising athlete Tharushi Karunaratne of Ratnayaka Central, Walala competed in heat 3 of the Women’s 400m and managed to secure automatic qualification for the semifinals of the world junior athletic championship which is now in progress in Cali Colombia. She took an impressive timing of 54.13s to clinch 4th place in the heat to qualify for the semi finals.

Karunaratne’s personal best in the event is 53.85s which was produced earlier this year and she will probably need another personal best if she is to progress to the finals of the event. The semifinal of the event will be held today (4) at 3.30 am Sri Lanka time. Karunaratne will be running in Semifinal number 1 (out of 3).

Previously, Karunaratne missed the 800m where she qualified with a personal best of 2:04.40mins as she couldn’t make it to Colombia on time. Along with Karunaratne, Long Jumper Hirusha Hashen also missed his qualification event in the Men’s Long Jump for the same reason.

Meanwhile Viharamahadevi Balika athlete Amesha Hettiarachchi also competed on Tuesday in the 400m hurdles Heat number 5 but she wasn’t able to qualify for the next round as she completed her heat with a timing of 1.02.11mins in 7th place.
