Sri Lanka’s Chef-de-Mission at the XXII Commonwealth Games in Birmingham Maj. Gen. Dampath Fernando (rtd) expressed disappointment that the manager of the judo team vanished along with a player from the Village on Monday.
“Actually I’m really disappointed about the official who is also president of the Sri Lanka Judo Association and a former Navy officer Lt Cdr Duminda Asela de Silva,” said Maj. Gen. Fernando.
The manager and 21-year-old judoka Chamila Dilani Marappulige were found missing from the Village on Monday. She lost her opening round of 16 clash in the women’s under 48kg weight category against Ashleigh-Anne Barnikel of Wales by Ippon in a contest that lasted just 31 seconds. “She vanished after taking part in the match and returning to the Village,” said Maj. Gen. Fernando.
“We have taken all the precautionary measures yet with all that only these people have vanished,” said Maj. Gen. Fernando, a former Army Chief of Staff who had formed a WhatsApp group with officials to keep a tab of the numbers and communicate other information related to the Games where a meeting of all CDMs (Chef-de-Mission) takes place every morning.
“We have reported them to the police and they are conducting investigations,” he added.
