Navy nabs another 47 illegal migrants

A special operation carried out by the Navy and the Wennappuwa Police at Wennappuwa on July 31, led to the apprehension of 47 suspected illegal migrants attempting to leave the country by sea.

The coordinated operation was mounted by the Western Naval Command and Wennappuwa Police, based on information received by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The group of individuals were nabbed after three vans were searched in Wennappuwa on the night of July 31. Among the apprehended persons were 37 males and six females over 18 years with four individuals below 18 years. The three vans used for this purpose were also taken into custody.

“The apprehended persons were identified as residents of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Kalmunai, Batticaloa, Puttalam, Chilaw, Marawila, Mahawewa, Mundalama and Wellawatta. They were handed over to Wennappuwa Police for further investigation,” the Navy Media Unit said.
