Indonesia reduces sentence of Umar Patek who killed 202 people

New Delhi: The bomber in the Bali terror attack that killed 202 people had his prison sentence further cut by Indonesia. This has infuriated Australia’s PM on Friday. If the terrorist is given parole, he may be released in a matter of days.

Patek’s sentence reduced by 5 moths

According to Indonesian officials, Umar Patek’s sentence has been lowered by another five months, bringing his total reductions to over two years, according to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Parole might be granted

Therefore, Patek might be granted parole prior to the bombings’ 20th anniversary in October.

Bombing claimed 88 Australian lives

“This will cause further distress to Australians who were the families of victims of the Bali bombings. We lost 88 Australian lives in those bombings,” Albanese told Channel 9.

Patek is abhorrent: Albanese

Albanese said he would continue making “diplomatic representations” to Indonesia about Patek’s sentence and a range of other issues, including Australians currently jailed in Indonesia. Albanese described Patek as “abhorrent”.

“His actions were the actions of a terrorist. They did have such dreadful results for Australian families that are ongoing, the trauma which is there,” Albanese told Channel 9.

Indonesia reduces sentence on independence day

On significant holidays like its Independence Day,  Indonesia frequently reduces prisoner sentences.

Patek could be released from Porong Prison in East Java province this month if he is granted parole, according to Zaeroji, the director of the provincial office for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Patek was given a 5-month reduction for good behaviour on Independence Day.
