New Delhi: India star Olympic Football captain Samar Banerjee has died at the age of 92 after suffering from long term illness.
‘Badru Da’ led the country to a historic fourth -place finish in 1956 Melbourne Olympics. After a glorious career at the game, Banerjee made himself a special place in the lovers of the sport.
Samar was suffering from Alzheimer, Azotemia and high-blood pressure related ailments. He was admitted to MR Bangur Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 on July 27.
Mohun Bagan posted a tweet about the demise on their official Twitter handle. “We are deeply saddened by the news of club legend Samar ‘Badru’ Banerjee’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” the tweet read.

While in conversation with PTI, Mohun Bagan secretary Debasish Dutta said, “As his health deteriorated he was shifted to the state-run SSKM Hospital under the supervision of state sports minister Arup Biswas. He breathed his last around 2.10am.”
“He was our beloved ‘Badru Da’ and we had bestowed him with the Mohun Bagan Ratna in 2009. It’s another big loss for the Maidan.”
Banerjee has served the nation as the player, a coach and a selector as well. He had Durand Cup (1953), Rovers Cup (1955) and Santosh Trophy in (1953, 1955).
