New Delhi: The Centre withdrew the long-awaited Personal Data Protection (PDP) Draft, 2021 on Wednesday, replacing it with a new bill that has a “comprehensive framework” and “modern digital privacy rules.”
On December 11, 2019, the PDP bill was initially introduced in Lok Sabha. The Joint Parliamentary Committee was given the bill, and on December 16, 2021, it presented its findings to Lok Sabha. A single law, put out by the committee, would cover both personal and non-personal datasets. The report’s recommendation to move toward complete localization of data was also in question.

To inform the Lok Sabha members of the withdrawal, a statement was distributed. According to reports, the statement mentioned that the government was developing a thorough legislative framework while taking 81 modifications and 12 recommendations from the JPC into account.
“The Joint Parliamentary Committee’s report on Personal Data protection bill had identified many issues that were relevant but beyond the scope of a modern Digital Privacy law,” Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Twitter.
He continued by saying that having a trillion-dollar digital economy would result in global standard cyber regulations and that privacy is a fundamental right of Indian residents.
