Driver’s feud leads to Polgahawela train suspension

Train No. 1528, an office train leaving for Colombo Fort and Ratmalana from Polgahawela has been suspended for several days following a dispute between locomotive drivers over a drivers’ rest room in Polgahawela station, it was reported.

According to Polgahawela railway station sources, the unwillingness of the drivers of the Ratmalana-bound train to share the rest room with the drivers of another train leaving for Kandy has led to this situation.

The Ratmalana bound office train and the Kandy bound school train are scheduled to leave from Polgahawela at 5.25 a.m. and 5.35 a.m. respectively.

A large number of passengers travelling to Ratmalana and Polgahawela via Colombo Fort have been affected due to this situation.

The locomotive driver of the Ratmalana-bound train is paid an overtime payment for 18 hours per day even though the train is not running, sources said.
