Breakdown at Norochcholai Power Plant Generator No. 1

A breakdown of Generator No. 1 of Norochcholai Coal Power Plant has been reported due to a technical fault.

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said that the engineers of the plant are working to identify the faults and bring the generator back to normal. The Minister further said that steps are being taken to restore the machine as soon as possible after identifying the relevant defects.

Due to the breakdown of this generator, the National Grid has lost about 300 Megawatts of electricity.

The No. 2 Generator of the Norochcholai Power Plant has also been switched off for regular maintenance purposes.

Thus, the National Grid has lost approximately 600 Megawatts of electricity capacity as both the No. 1 and No.2 Generators are currently out of operation.

Minister Wijesekera said that until Norochcholai No. 1 power plant is restored, it is hoped that the necessary electricity needs will be met through West Coast and other thermal power plants.

However, the Norochcholai No. 3 Generator is currently operating and supplying an electricity capacity of about 300 Megawatts to the National Grid.
