World Athletics Championships 2022: India has wrapped up their campaign at the World Athletics Championships and after many years of wait, they have finally managed to grab medal.

Neeraj Chopra created history by winning India’s first-ever silver medal in Javelin Throw as he threw his spear at a distance of 88.13m.

Neeraj after the throw said, “It’s feeling good. It’s pretty great because I won silver at the World Championships. But there is always a desire for gold, so I will try to improve my performance in the next World Championships.”

Indian contingent at World Athletics Championships and their performances:-

Avinash Sable

Sable finished 11th in men’s 3000m steeplechase final of the World Athletics Championship 2022 as he finished with a time of 8:31.75s which was below par considering his season and personal best of 8:12.48s. The Olympic Champion Soufiane El Bakkali claimed gold with a time of 8:25.13s. The Indian runner had clocked 8:18.75 seconds to finish third in the heat and directly qualified for the final.

This was Sable’s second successive final appearance at the WAC. Avinash had also qualified for the 2019 World Championships final in Doha, where he had finished 13th.

Annu Rani

Rani finished seventh in the women’s javelin throw final with a below-par effort of 61.12m at the World Championships. The national record holder had qualified for the final as eighth best in the qualification round with a throw of 59.60m. Defending champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia won the gold with a best and world-leading throw of 66.91m.

This was Annu’s third appearance in the tournament. Rani had finished eighth in the finals with a best throw of 61.12m in the 2019 edition in Doha. The 29-year-old could not qualify for the finals in 2017 in London after finishing 10th in her qualification group.

Murali Sreeshankar

Sreeshankar became the first ever Indian to qualify for the men’s long jump final at World Championships. Murali finished seventh at the final event with a 7.95m jump after registering 8m in qualifying. The performance at the WAC final was way below Sreeshankar’s season and personal best of 8.36m. China’s Jianan Wang won the gold with a sensational final round jump of 8.36m.

Eldhose Paul

Eldhose Paul finished ninth in the men’s triple jump final by producing the best jump of 16.79m in the three attempts. The 25-year-old failed to make it to the top eight and only the top eight finishers after three rounds get three more jumps. Paul had become the first Indian to qualify for the triple jump final after finishing 12th overall in the qualification round with an effort of 16.68m.

Muhammed Anees in Men’s long jump finished 24th
Abdulla Aboobacker Men’s triple jump finished 19th
Praveen Chithravel Men’s triple jump finished 17th
Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, Naganathan Pandi, and Rajesh Ramesh in the men’s 4x400m relay finished last in their heat
