Seven sentenced for assaulting Brigadier, driver

Seven individuals, who pleaded guilty of eight charges against them over an incident of assaulting an Army Brigadier and his driver and damaging his army  vehicle in Gohagoda, Katugastota, were handed down a three years’ and 11 months’ jail sentence, suspended for 10 years, by Kandy Magistrate Shrinith Wijesekara.

Katugastota Police charged the seven individuals over unlawful assembly, unlawful obstruction, intimidation of public servants, obstruction of duty, assaulting and causing injuries, damaging the vehicle and improper behaviour under the influence of liquor. The suspects pleaded guilty for all charges.

Kothmale Army Camp’s Language Training Centre Director Brigadier Eric Nishantha and his driver were assaulted on February 13. They sustained injuries and the vehicle they were in was also damaged.
