Prez visit to Parliament causes chaos: Sittings suspended

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had to suspend Parliament sittings yesterday as the Opposition MPs protested against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the Chamber.

The protesting MPs shouted, ‘Go Home Gota,’ when he entered the Chamber.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, at the time, was making a special statement, informing the House of the government’s roadmap for economic recovery.

The President was seen watching the protest from his seat.

While the Opposition MPs chanted ‘Gota Go Home’ the government MPs shouted, ‘We Want Gota.’

Former Minister S.B. Dissanayake was seen leading the government MPs to shout slogans in support of the President.

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who too was in the Chamber at the time, was seen telling something to the President.

Sergeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando.

As the protesters and their ruling party counterparts continued to hurl verbal abuses the Speaker announced that the House sittings would be suspended for 10 minutes.
