President orders Minister to step down for probe

Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva will step down temporarily as Ports, Shipping and Aviation Services Minister of on the instructions of the President until the investigations are concluded.

The President’s Media Division said the President has ordered to conduct an immediate investigation into the allegations levelled by the Opposition Leader regarding a transaction between Aviation Ministry and a private company.

Meanwhile Port Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva in a letter to the President yesterday requested the to carry out a full scale investigation into the allegation to protect the reputation of the government and himself.

He said that he will step down from his Cabinet portfolio to facilitate an impartial inquiry over the allegation of soliciting a bribe from a Japanese Company.

The Minister in his letter to the President said the Leader of the Opposition, accused that a minister has demanded a bribe from the Taisei Corporation, which is in charge of the construction of the Bandaranaike International Airport Development Project which comes under the purview of the Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry.
