Police Sergeant arrested with knife

Colombo Fort Police have arrested a Police Sergeant while attempting to enter the President’s House in Colombo, which is currently in the custody of the anti-Government protests, with a sharp object in the wee hours of Monday.

He was in the Galle Face protest site on Sunday and had later attempted to enter the president’s house wearing his police uniform and casual shoes. The suspect is said to be an officer attached to the Police Transport Division in Narahenpita and a resident of Homagama.

The Fort Police produced him before the Colombo Additional Magistrate Keminda Perera yesterday and the Magistrate ordered the suspect to be remanded till July 15.

The Magistrate also called a report pertaining to the mental health of the suspect.

According to the Police, the suspect had also joined with the anti-Government protestors expressing his support at Maharagama on July 9.

“The Police will conduct an investigation into the matter and the police headquarters will take disciplinary action against him,” the Daily news learnt.

Meanwhile, the protestors at the Temple Trees had handed over another person to the Kollupitiya Police for behaving in a suspicious manner with a knife in his bag at the Temple Trees premises.

He had been remanded till July 21 by the courts, the OIC of Kollupitiya police told Daily news.
