PM offers baton to JVP Leader

By Saman Indrajith

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament yesterday that he was ready to resign from the Premiership if JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake was ready to accept it and steer the country out of the present crisis.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe challenged Dissanayake to take up the position of the Prime Minister if the latter could present a better and a viable plan for economic recovery.

“There is no use in marching on the roads. What we need is a plan and mechanism to get out of this crisis. We are ready to resign. I and the Cabinet of Ministers will resign and the President could appoint Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Prime Minister if they could present a solution to this crisis. There is no need to take to the roads to worsen this crisis. We need to discuss and find a solution. It is for that purpose this Parliament must meet,” the Premier said.

The PM said that Dissanayake had said he could revive the country’s economy in six months.

“That is why I am asking MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake to submit his plan to the President. If you don’t want to go to the President, present it to this Parliament. Let us discuss it in this Parliament. If that plan is better and more effective than the plan we are implementing now, we will implement it. Such a plan would help him win the Nobel Prize in Economics,” the PM said.

“So if there is such a plan, I am ready to resign and let him take up this position. I am ready to give up my position and support that programme.”
