Manohar Lal Khattar congratulates Neeraj Chopra, explains reason for Haryana’s sporting success

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday congratulated Neeraj Chopra for winning a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. In the men’s javelin throw final, Neeraj Chopra clocked 88.13 meters in his fourth attempt to finish second.

According to news agency ANI, Khattar said, “Neeraj Chopra has created history by winning silver in the World Athletics Championships. This is the first time that India has won a silver medal in this championship. Earlier Anju Bobby George won the bronze medal in 2003. I congratulate him. He has made Haryana proud.”

“I would also like to congratulate Neeraj’s family in Panipat and congratulate them on the success of their son. I just pray that he goes ahead and makes the country proud in the field of sports,” he added.

The Chief Minister further said that the sports facilities provided by the Haryana Government are one of the reasons for the state’s excellent performance in sports.

The Haryana Chief Minister said, “The Haryana government has always supported sports in every sense. We have given a developed infrastructure and provided proper training to our athletes. We have given the cash prizes that should be given to the players after the tournament. These are some of the reasons why Haryana excels in the field of sports.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Neeraj Chopra for winning the silver medal.

PM Modi wrote on his official Twitter handle, “A great achievement by one of our most iconic athletes! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra on winning the historic silver medal at the World Championships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Congrats to Neeraj in his upcoming World Championships. Best wishes for the endeavours.”

Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra started his campaign in the final with a foul. After this his second throw was 82.38 meters. He improved it with a good throw of 86.37 in his third, but he was still out of the top three, where Petersen, Czech Republic’s Jakob Valdelez and Germany’s Julian Weber held positions.

But things changed drastically for Neeraj Chopra in the fourth attempt, surpassing Wallezch’s best throw. There were two more fouls in Neeraj’s fifth and sixth attempts but it didn’t matter. Wadlejch’s best score of 88.03 earned him the bronze medal, followed by Weber in fourth.
