Magistrate orders Navy officer’s arrest for assault at queue

Galle Chief Magistrate Pavithra Sanjivani Pathirana yesterday (7) ordered the Harbour Police to arrest the Navy officer who had assaulted a private bus driver in the fuel queue at the Galle Petrol Station last Sunday.

The victim is a private bus driver at Kalahe, Wanchawala.

The bus driver in his complaint with the Harbour Police had alleged that when he was in the queue to pump diesel for the bus following the proper procedure, the Navy officer who controls the fuel station had informed him that no fuel can be issued without tokens and ordered him to leave the queue.

Subsequently the driver had resisted to leave the queue stating that he had been waiting for fuel since morning when the Navy officer had opened the door of the bus and assaulted him while other Navy officials were watching. The driver had taken his bus out of the queue out of fear and lodged a police complaint.

When the Harbour Police reported the matter to Court through a ‘B’ report and requested to issue summons to the suspect, the Magistrate rejected it and ordered the suspect be arrested and produced in Court.

Sergeant Gunathilake (4819) made submissions to Court on instructions of OIC Chief Inspector Duminda Kumara.
