Imran Khan slams Pakistan Army chief for begging US for IMF loan

Pakistan Economic Crisis: Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Imran Khan on Friday slammed the country’s Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa for asking for a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to the report by Geo TV, the PTI chief said that it is not the job of the Pakistan Army chief to look after economic matters.

“If the news of Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa approaching the United States authorities for speedy disbursement of loans from International Monetary Fund (IMF) was true, it means that we (Pakistan) are weak,” Imran Khan said.

He also questioned whether the US will ask for anything in return for helping Pakistan.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia on Friday, Bajwa has urged the United States to help Islamabad with the speedy disbursement of loans from the IMF. Geo TV reported that Bajwa urged the White House and the Treasury Department to urge the lender to expedite the bailout process and immediately release the approximately USD 1.2 billion that Pakistan received under the restart loan program.

Commenting on the development, former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan said that neither the Washington-based lender has faith in the government nor other countries.

Speaking about the deteriorating economic situation in Pakistan, Imran Khan said, “The most worrying thing at this point of time is the lack of confidence in the market. Somebody has to be held responsible for the current situation.”

He reiterated his demand for early elections and said that political stability can be seen only when fair and transparent elections are conducted.

The former Pakistan prime minister said, “People in power are afraid of elections.”

He recalled that when he was removed from office, he had done nothing but contact the public. The PTI president cited the absence of a future roadmap by the coalition government as one of the reasons behind the economic crisis, saying, “If the coalition government had announced early elections, today the country would have avoided this calamity.”
