CWG2022: India win silver, Sanket lifts despite injury

Birmingham: Indian win silver on Day 2 of the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 as weightlifter Sanket Sargar shines despite the ankle injury.

Sagar won the silver medal in 55 kg men’s category and came very close to gold medal but a Malaysian went past the Indian in last moments.

Indian win silver, first medal of tournament

Weightlifter Sanket Sagar has opened the account for the Indian contingent as he lifts 55kg weight despite suffering ankle injury during the game.

Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan clinches gold with a stunning attempt of 142kg in clean & jerk to take his total to 249kg. Courageous Sanket Mahadev Sargar tried to attempt his third lift after an elbow injury barely seconds ago but he predictably wasn’t able to complete the lift.

Sanket’s total after the snatch and clean and jerk round is 248kg with 113 in Snatch and 135kg in C&J. Sanket Mahadev Sargar hurts himself while attempting a 138kg lift in his second attempt in the clean and jerk round.

“If I can win gold, I am sure recognition will come my way. It is my dream to be able to support my father and show him my gratitude for all that he has done for me,” Sargar had said before the game.

Sargar coach Vijay Sharma had said, “”Unless things go dramatically wrong, I am expecting a gold medal from him.”
