Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that certain party leaders had provided protection to underworld thugs who were responsible for the setting of fire to the houses of MPs and engaged in violence.
“We know who those who are behind these thugs and drug lords. Therefore, not only the President but even we have to take certain safety measures in order to ensure our own safety”.
He said this in response to a question raised by SJB Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman who insinuated that the President is not to be seen as he is afraid to step out in public.
“We have not seen the President in person unless on TV. We have seen the President surrounded by government officials.”
He also raised the issue of the incident at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation centre and said that those who are directed to this center are sent for treatment. “They need medication, various counseling etc and instead of this rehabilitation being done by health staff, why are they kept under military rule? The reason for the recent clash is also as a result of this military rule.” Regarding the Kandakadu incident, Minister Ranatunga said that he would notify the relevant minister regarding the question and get a response.
