Approval awaited to commence Cannabis cultivation for commercial purposes

Minister of Plantation Industries and Minister of Industries Ramesh Pathirana responding to a question raised by MP Shantha Bandara said that they are awaiting the approval of the Attorney General’s Department to go ahead with the legal procedures for the legalization of Cannabis. However, he said that once the approval of the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) is received Cannabis cultivation could commence.

However, he said that it will only be allowed only commercially under the supervision of the NDDCB. MP Shantha Bandara noted that by legalizing cannabis in the country, Sri Lanka could expect to earn around USD10,000 to USD 12,000 million annually.
