AG orders police to act against MP’s shooting in the air

Panadura SSP Samantha Wedage yesterday said that further investigations into the incident where SLPP MP Lalith Warnakumara had fired shots towards a house near Dombagoda army camp in the Anguruwathota police division will be carried out on the advice of Attorney General.

He said that there is no possibility of arresting the MP in question as no one has been injured in the incident.Accordingly facts with regard to the incident had been filed in Court on July 11.

The SSP said that the investigation dossier will be referred to the Attorney General for his advice.

The MP had told the Anguruwathota Police Station over the phone that there was an argument with a group of people at his relative’s house and when it started to turn into a fight, he shot in the air to protect himself. He has also been said that the firearm had a licence and had been issued by the government. But the weapon has not yet been handed over to the police to send the weapon to the Government Analyst to ascertain whether shots were fired from the same weapon. The MP has also failed to report to the police station and give a statement over the incident, police sources said
