Additional security for MPs this week

A joint special security programme will be implemented for the security of the parliamentarians as well as in and around Parliament on July 19 and 20, when sessions will be held to elect a new President, a police headquarters source said.

He said several special decisions will be taken at the meeting of the Security Council.

The official also said that Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has given orders to ensure that the election of the President is conducted without any hindrance and that the MPs are not affected in any way.

The officer said that seven members from the Ministerial Security Division have been provided for the security of a Cabinet Minister and six MSD officers have been provided for the security of a Member of Parliament after the recent violent incidents.

In addition to this security, a joint security programme with the Army will also be implemented for the security of all MPs in the coming days, he said.

He further stated that even now, many ministers are staying in apartment complexes and friends’ houses and a security programme will be implemented to ensure their security when they arrive in Parliament.
