Who’s responsible for grounding of Russian plane - Wimal

National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa on Sunday said Sri Lanka antagonizing Russia due to the grounding of the Aeroflot flight in Colombo will impact adversely in Sri Lanka’s quest to get Russian fuel and cheap fertilizer in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis.

“Russia is a country where oil, which currently costs about USD 110 a barrel, can be purchased from Russia at between USD 30 and USD 70 a barrel, provide an answer to the chemical fertilizer problem we face, and attract more tourists to our country as a solution to the foreign exchange crisis we face. In addition Russia is also the second largest buyer of tea from Sri Lanka” he said.

Weerawansa on Sunday said that the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary should take collective responsibility of turning the current economic disaster into a major humanitarian disaster.

He said that the present Government had angered China in advance and now it has even brought Russia to the brink of animosity.

“We all know that the country is facing a very sharp political and economic crisis and our conclusion is that the Government is pursuing a policy of allowing this crisis to escalate,” he said.

He was speaking at a special media briefing of the Independent Parliamentarians’ Forum held at the Communist Party of Sri Lanka Headquarters.
