West Bengal: Muslim clerics appeal to Mamata Banerjee after prophet row violence

Kolkata:

An association of Muslim clerics on Sunday night urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to allow any more rallies against the remarks made by two BJP leaders on Prophet Mohammad.

The Bengal Imams Association has also asked Muslims not to fall into the trap of vested interests and not to engage in violence.

Mohammed Yahya, president of the Bengal Imams Association, said in a video statement that violence, arson and attacks on property and police personnel by a section of the minority community in the name of the movement had damaged the economy and caused great distress to the general public.

“The remarks of Nupur Sharma and another BJP leader are unacceptable and we are awaiting administrative action. We do not allow the people of the state to hold violent protests in Howrah, Murshidabad and Nadia districts. Damage to property, stoning of police and baton-charging by the police cannot promote the image of a religious person or his ideal,” he added.

Yahya had on Thursday called for protests inside mosques across the state, demanding the arrest of two BJP leaders, but said the administration was free to take action against those blocking roads.
