WATCH: American teenager Coco Gauff writes anti-violence message on TV Camera

Coco Gauff, an 18-year-old American tennis player sailed into the women’s singles final of the French Open and seized this opportunity to bring immediate attention on the pressing issues of gun violence in the USA.

became the youngest Grand Slam finalist in 18 years of French Open after defeating Martina Trevian 6-3, 6-1 in her semi-final and left her mark by voicing her opinions in front of the world. She wrote, “Peace. End Gun Violence. Coco”

Match winners at Roland Garros are asked to write something on TV Camera after the game and usually, these are light-hearted but Gauff wanted “to stress on important issues. 

Setting the summit clash with World no. 1 Iga Swiatek, Gauff said, “Yeah it’s a Grand Slam final but there are so many things going on in the world, especially in the U.S. — I think it’s not important to stress over a tennis match,” in post-match on-court interview. 

Just hours before her game, at least four people at a hospital building in Tulsa, Oklahoma when a gunman started the abrupt shooting. This is yet another string in the mass shooting cases that the United States have witnessed in recent weeks.

Eight days earlier, 19 young children were left dead in a mass shooting in a Texas school. Sharing her childhood memories, Gauff talked about the deaths of 17 in February 2018 when a teenager had started the firing in Parkland school in Florida. Some of her friends were present there at that time. 

“Luckily they were able to make it out of it. I just think it’s crazy, I think I was maybe 13 or 14 when that happened, and still nothing has changed.”

Coco expressed her intentions of speaking out on social issues now that she has turned 18 years. “Since I was younger, my dad told me I could change the world with my racquet. He didn’t mean that by like just playing tennis. He meant speaking out on issues like this.”
