Two MPs among 26 held so far

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recorded 727 statements from the witnesses over the May 9 attack on the peaceful protestors at Galle Face, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa.

He said a total of 26 suspects including two Parliamentarians have been taken into custody in connection with these violent incidents so far. Meanwhile, the CID has arrested two more suspects over the murder of Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala at Nittambuwa yesterday. They are a 53-year-old three-wheeler driver of Nittambuwa and a 27-year-old resident of Haputale, who is said to be the supervisor on the third floor of the building where the MP was assassinated.

They were to be produced before the courts yesterday.

The number of suspects arrested over the islandwide violence on May 9 is 2,423 and 1,069 of them have been remanded by the courts, SSP Thalduwa said.
