Thousands affected by stormy weather, one fatality

One person was killed and more than 12,326 people, belonging to 2,672 families, in six districts, had been affected heavy rains and gale-force winds in many parts of the country, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday.

A Disaster Relief Officer, for the Kiriella Divisional Secretariat, died on Tuesday, when he was carried away by strong currents.

A large number of people, in the Ratnapura, Kandy, Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo and Matara districts, have been badly affected. Of these, 236 persons belonging to 57 families are staying in five shelters, said the Assistant Director (Media) of the Disaster Management Centre, Pradeep Kodippili.

He added that 66 houses in the district were partially damaged due to inclement weather. The worst affected district was Gampaha, where 8,517 people, belonging to 2,448 families, had been affected.
