Speeding train derails in China; driver killed, seven passengers injured

A speeding train derailed on Saturday in southwest China’s Guizhou province due to a landslide, killing the driver and injuring at least seven passengers.

Bullet train D2809 traveling from China’s southwestern Guiyang province to the southern province of Guangzhou derailed due to a sudden landslide at Rongjiang station at that time.

The report quoted official CCTV news as saying that the train driver was killed.

The Global Times newspaper reported, “Two coaches of the D2809, a bullet train from Guizhou in Guiyang, right wing China to Guangzhou, South China, derailed at a station in Guizhou at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday due to a slush. The driver of the train died. 7 passengers have sustained non-fatal injuries.

The seventh and eighth coaches of the train derailed at the entrance to the Yuezhai Tunnel. All the injured passengers were sent to the local hospital and another 136 passengers have been rescued. Rescue work is in full swing at the spot and the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Rongjiang Station is located in Rongjiang County of Guaungzhou and is a class III station managed by the Chengdu Bureau of China Railways. The construction of the station started in December 2013 and was put into test operation in August 2014. The station officially started service on 26 December 2014.
