SC dismisses FR application filed by engineer Hameem

The Supreme Court yesterday refused to hear the Fundamental Rights application that sought an order preventing Inspector General of Police, Army Commander and respondents from dispersing the Gotagama at Galle Face illegally.

The FR was filed by an engineer M. N. N. Hameem who was involved in the protest at Galle Face. The Petitioner has cited IGP, Army Commander and Defence Secretary, Secretary to the President and Attorney General as respondents.

The petition in his petition cited that a peaceful protest has been going on at the Galle Face and the respondents are obstructing the protesters by imposing curfew and emergency regulations.

The petitioner noted that Police had filed a complaint before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court seeking an order to disperse the protest and such action would violate his right to freedom of assembly.
