#NupurSharmaControversy: TMC MP Sukhendu Ray accuses Guv, BJP of 'provocative' comments

Trinamool Congress leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray on Saturday accused West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of making ‘provocative’ comments amid the number of protests erupting in Howrah district due to the offensive comments made by expelled saffron party leader Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad. 

“Administration has arrested more than 70 people till now. No one will be spared who is trying to create disturbance. Governor Dhankhar and BJP leaders are making provocative statements on the issue,” said Ray.

Meanwhile, the Governor slammed the Mamata Banerjee-led state government claiming that “no preventive and precautionary measures” has been taken even after witnessing protests over serval days now. 

In a series of tweets, Dhankar said, “Since June 09 in particular there has been awful administration failure that took no preventive and precautionary measures. Law breakers were allowed to have free for all. Only prompt exemplary action can be deterrent. Over a month situation has been cause of concern.”

“Concerned at worsening law and order situation since May 09. Inaction Chief Secretary West Bengal, West Bengal Police, Kolkata Police is unfortunate endorsement of the criminality of law violators. Appeal Mamata Banerjee to sternly deal with law breakers. All involved be identified and arrested,” he added. 

In the wake of protests, Howrah Police Commissioner of Howrah was shunted down following the appointment of IPS Praveen Tripathi. Also, In Howrah Rural, IPS Swati Bhangalia has been recruited as new Superintendent of police (SP)

Earlier in the day, state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that certain political parties were behind the Howrah violence. She also questioned that why should people suffer for “BJP’s sin”.

“As I have said before, violent incidents have been taking place in Howrah for two days now. There are some political parties behind this who want to cause riots, but these things will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken against all of them indulged in violence. Why should the common people suffer because of BJP’s sins?” Banerjee said in a tweet. 

Section 144 was imposed in Howrah after fresh clashes took place between police and a group of protestors at Panchla Bazaar in Howrah amid a row over remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
