National Herald case: ED violating law, alleges Congress leaders

New Delhi:

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who was detained on Tuesday for protesting against the interrogation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, slammed the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) over corruption charges against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Himanta Biswa Sarma and Narayan Rane.

“Our protest will continue… what happened to ED cases against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Himanta Biswa Sarma and Narayan Rane?… I’ve been detained,” said Baghel.

The Delhi Police on Tuesday detained Baghel and other Congress leaders including the party’s General Secretary Randeep Surjewala. The Congress leaders were demonstrating against the ED for questioning former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case.

Gandhi is being questioned for the second consecutive day.

Earlier in the day, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram also raised questions over ED saying if the latter has filed cases against any of the saffron party leaders in the past 4-5 year when the BJP is in the Centre.

“Obviously, they’re not following the law and in a democracy, we are entitled to protest… Is there any BJP leader against whom the ED has registered a case in the last 4-5 years? Is there any BJP-ruled state where the ED has registered a case?,” said Chidambaram.

“We’re protesting against misuse of law, if ED follows the law, we’ve no problem. But ED is not following the law… We’re asking what’s the scheduled offence? There’s no answer. Which police agency has registered an FIR? No answer; no copy of FIR,” he added.
