More suspects arrested over May 9 violence

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested another suspect in connection with the attack on a Police DIG and a Superintendent of Police (SP) at Panchikawatta, Maradana during the islandwide violence that took place on May 9, on Thursday (9).

The suspect is a 43-year-old resident of Maligawatta.

“The suspect was produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate and has been remanded till June 24,” Police said. Meanwhile, the CID has also arrested another suspect in connection with the assassination of the Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his PSO, Sergeant Gunawaradane at Nittambuwa during the islandwide violence, on Friday (10).

The suspect is a 24-year-old resident of Pasyala. He was to be produced before the Attanagalla Magistrate on Saturday.

The CID has arrested 31 suspects in connection with this murder and they have been remanded by the court.

CID is investigating the cases.

Police have arrested 21 suspects in connection with the islandwide violence occurred on May 9, within the 24 hours ended last morning.

Eight of them have been remanded after being produced before the courts, police said.

The total number of suspects arrested on the matter so far is 2,725 and 1,083 of them have been remanded by the courts.
