The Kerala State Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Commission on Sunday sought a response from police over allegations against its officer who allegedly entered houses in a Dalit colony in Haripad area of Alappuzha district of the state. The accused police officer have also allegedly made casteist comments against the residents.
“I feel it was a high-handed approach of the police,” a news agency PTI quoted BS Mavoji, the chariman of the commission.
The chairman further informed that it has asked the Alappuzha SP to submit a report regarding the illegal raid and castiest remarks by its officer.
Meanwhile, the commission informed that it has taken up the matter on its own after coming across to the social media posts condemning the act.
The residents of the Dalit colony also approached the commission against the officer’s activity. The incident had taken place at the intervening night of June 4-5 post midnight.
While defending itself, an officer from the Kareelakulangara police station said the police was on patrolling that time when it was interrogating a couple of boys standing beside a motorbike and asking about the reason of them being out so late. Meanwhile, the people came out of their houses and gathered that led to the arguments between the residents and the police.
The officer alleged the residents of blocking their jeep and taking away the key following the assault to the police.
Owing to the situation, more police officers had to be called in for the rescue under Kayamkulam Deputy SP’s leadership. The police then, arrested three locals who were continuously barring the police to perform their duty.
