Kanpur: Amid PM Modi's speech in Dehat, communal clashes erupt in Becon Ganj; 15 arrested

While on one hand, President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were addressing the public in Kanpur Dehat, dramatic visuals of communal clashes emerged from the neighbour district of Kanpur Nagar. The clashes erupted after stone pelting was reported in Becon Ganj

 where the people from Muslim organisations forced shopkeepers to shut down their shops as a protest against the remarks of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohhmmad.

eople divided into two groups were seen on road throwing stones at each other as well as on the police personnel. After gaining control over the situation, the police arrested over a dozen of activists involved in the incident.  

BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma made objectionable remarks against against Prophet Muhammad during a televised news debate. Following which,

Thane police in Maharashtra on Monday registered a case on a complaint

made by Irfan Abubakar Shaikh, a hotelier from South Mumbai. 

After Mumbai Police, Hyderabad City Police has also booked the BJP leader for “abusive, false and hurtful” words against the Prophet Muhammad and the Islam religion. 

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public function in Paraunkh village of

Kanpur Dehat

. PM Modi was accompanied by President Ram Nath Kovind and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. 

Soon after the incident was reported, the police reached the site and stablised the situation. 

Speaking on the issue, Kanpur DM Neha Sharma informed that Joint Commissioner along with other police officials arrived at the incident site immediately after knowing about the havoc. Sharma said the police have managed to take control over the situation but more reinforcement force will reach in a while after which the security will be deployed in the area. 

The Kanpur DM stressed upon the necessity of nabbing the miscreants involved in the case following the legal action against them. 

On the occasion, the PM Modi hailed the soil of the village and called it a fine example of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. He asserted that the strength of the ideal villages of India is in Paraunkh. 

Notably, Paraunkh is the ancestral village of the President.
